The Smiths On Screen

Screen Stockport Film Festival is declaring Monday 13th May 2013 officially #SmithsDay in Stockport. It's exactly thirty years to the day since The Smiths released their debut single Hand in Glove, that was recorded at Strawberry Studios in Stockport.

We're celebrating by holding ‘The Smiths on Screen’ event at the art deco Plaza Super Cinema in Stockport at 12pm and 7.30pm.

The Smiths on Screen will feature a discussion on The Smiths' cultural influences from film, television and literature followed by a screening of Shelagh Delaney's 'A Taste of Honey'.

12.00pm - 4.00pm: Afternoon Presentation

The afternoon presentation will feature exclusive documentary footage and a discussion about the band's cultural influences with guest speakers Len Brown, author of Meetings With Morrissey, and Mick Middles, author of The Smiths' The Complete Story.

This session also includes a screening of the short film 'Unloveable' by independent filmmaker Carl Hunter and Pete Naylor about an obsessive Smiths’ fan, featuring a cameo role by Smiths drummer Mike Joyce, and a screening of 'Shelagh Delaney’s Salford' made by Ken Russell in 1960 focusing on the home of Morrissey’s favourite playwright.

The afternoon concludes with a screening of one of Morrissey's favourite films 'A Taste of Honey', written by Shelagh Delaney, which was an inspiration for the lyrics of Hand In Glove and other Smiths' songs.

Some scenes were filmed on location in Stockport and feature St Mary's Church and Stockport Viaduct, you check one of the moments Stockport appears in the film in the clip below.

7.30pm - 10.00pm: Evening Presentation
